Tiffany L. Thomas

Once you were the pride of men -
sweet wife
sea wife.

Now you spend your mornings
baring body to the sun.
And your afternoons
following ships,
stalking their scraps,
daring to surge aboard
only to be kicked back down.

In your history together,
this is hardly the worst of it
and it is easy enough
for you to circle deeper,
swim faster,
and the briefest taste
is worth the
inevitable hit.

Salt and sea,
their fish and flesh
are not so different.

At night
you keep to the rocks
and hold tight to your skin.

TIFFANY THOMAS was born in Kodiak, Alaska - an island that lies in the heart of many of her creative works. A recent graduate of Spring Hill College, she continues to study creative writing.
